The town

About Reidsville

Reidsville grew from Wright’s Crossroads, a tavern and store on the road linking Danville and Salem. Reuben Reid farmed nearby and ran a store and inn, and in 1829 the family got a post office called Reidsville, with his son David, later a governor, as postmaster. The city incorporated in 1873. Tobacco ruled the economy for years, and the American Tobacco Company was its mainstay until 1994. Textile mills also operated here, though most have closed. Since 1976 the Reidsville Downtown Corporation has worked to revive downtown, and the city won an All-America City Award in 2008. National Register sites include Chinqua-Penn Plantation and the Reidsville Historic District, and bluegrass musician Tony Rice is among its notable people. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
