About Sanford

Sanford is the county seat of Lee County. It was incorporated in 1874 and named for C.O. Sanford, a civil engineer who helped build the area’s rail lines, and it has been a railroad and industrial center ever since. The city sits where white beach sand meets Piedmont clay, which made it a major brick maker. In 1959 it produced a tenth of the country’s bricks and was named the Brick Capital of the USA. When Lee County was formed in 1907 the courthouse was placed between Sanford and Jonesboro, and the two merged in 1947. Textiles are made here, and a vaccine plant became the largest employer in 2006. The downtown historic district and Temple Theatre are on the National Register. The Railroad House Museum and San-Lee Park are local draws, and blues musician Floyd Council came from Sanford. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • Support arts businesses and working artists; this subject comes from federal Census counts.
  • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Sanford advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Preview of the Ray Arts Index v1.2, which is being finalized. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
