The town

About Southern Pines

Southern Pines began as a place where Northerners came for their health in winter. Land was bought in 1884 and the town incorporated in 1887. Its past also includes a dark chapter: by 1898 it had become a sundown town that barred African Americans from living or doing business there. The Southern Pines Golf Club, among the earliest courses by Donald Ross, dates to 1906. The town sits in southern Moore County in the Sandhills, bordered by Aberdeen, Pinehurst, Carthage and Whispering Pines. The James Boyd House, Shaw House and Southern Pines Historic District are on the National Register of Historic Places. Amtrak serves the town’s station, and Sandhills Community College is in the area. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • Make sure local arts nonprofits file with an arts (NTEE “A”) code and the town’s address.
  • Support arts businesses and working artists; this subject comes from federal Census counts.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Southern Pines advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
