About Thomasville

Thomasville takes its name from John Warwick Thomas, a state legislator who backed a railroad through Davidson County and opened the first store here in 1852. The North Carolina Railroad arrived in 1855 and the town incorporated in 1857. Furniture became its trade, starting with chairs made at home, and Thomasville Chair grew into the leading maker after its start in 1904. By 1916 local plants were turning out thousands of chairs a day, and cotton and hosiery mills followed. The last Thomasville Furniture plants closed in 2014. Mohawk Industries, Old Dominion Freight Line and Cook Out are based here. The Big Chair was rebuilt in concrete in 1951 and is its best-known landmark. The town hosts Everybody’s Day, the state’s oldest festival. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
  • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Thomasville advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
