About

The American Indian Heritage Celebration is presented each year by the North Carolina Museum of History, supported by two community partners: the state's Commission of Indian Affairs and its American Indian Commission. For over thirty years it has served as the closing highlight of American Indian Heritage Month in the state. The program pairs a virtual day of education with a festival held in person, and it brings together members of all nine tribes recognized by North Carolina. Visitors encounter the artistic, historical and cultural contributions of the state's American Indian communities, both traditional and contemporary. Its planning committee keeps one message at the center of every edition: visibility, the point that Indigenous people are still here.
