About

Biscuits and Banjos grew out of a milestone: twenty years since the Black Banjo Gathering, a 2005 musical summit in Boone, NC that led to the founding of the GRAMMY-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. To mark that anniversary, Rhiannon Giddens curated the Biscuits & Banjos Festival in Durham. Across three days, thousands of people came to honor Black music, art and culture at concerts, workshops, jams, culinary events, film screenings, readings, panels and square dances, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops reunited on stage for the first time in more than ten years. That work now continues through the Biscuits & Banjos Foundation, which Giddens founded. It honors the African diaspora’s part in shaping American culture through food, literature, music and community, with special attention to Black-led roots, country, folk and old time music, and it pairs concerts with food, storytelling and conversation.
