About
The Meherrin Powwow takes place each year on October's first weekend at the Meherrin Tribal Grounds near Ahoskie in Hertford County. Hosted by the Meherrin Indian Tribe, it centers on dance and drum competitions, with traditional craft stalls and food vendors. Participants and visitors come from across the United States and Canada, and first-time guests are welcome. Golf-cart shuttles carry elders, veterans and people with disabilities from the parking area to the entrance. The Meherrin, who call themselves Kauwets'a·ka, or People of the Water, are a state-recognized nation. Their homeland spans northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, and the tribe is working to revive its language and preserve its heritage.
