About
Singing on Grandfather traces back to 1924, when Joseph Larkin Hartley organized a church picnic on Grandfather Mountain with gospel music, fellowship and open-air worship. The Hartley, MacRae and Morton families stewarded it for generations, and the free event became the longest-running gospel convention of the southern Appalachians. A century of singers, from circuit-riding preachers to well-known names, has performed in MacRae Meadows. Today the Singing on Grandfather Foundation keeps the gathering free and family centered, welcoming churches to take part and providing the technical and operational support behind it. It returns to the meadows each year on the fourth Sunday in June, when families come to sing old-time gospel together outdoors.
