About
Appalachian State University's Hayes School of Music sits in downtown Boone below Howard's Knob and prepares students to work as performers, music teachers, music therapists and music business professionals. The school carries the name of Mariam Cannon Hayes. More than 475 students study music education, performance, therapy, sacred music, theory and composition, the music industry, jazz, and graduate programs, taught by over 50 faculty members, with many ensembles to join. Every new degree student auditions, and those auditions decide scholarship awards. Outside its degrees, the school operates Cannon Music Camp and a Community Music School. Each year it stages about 200 concerts and recitals, most of them free, and performances can also be watched by livestream.
