About

The Duke University Department of Music in Durham combines theory, history, ethnomusicology, composition and performance in its curriculum, with a low student-faculty ratio. Music became a full department at Duke in 1960, and since 1974 it has been based in the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building, which also houses a music library and the Duke University Musical Instrument Collections. The department offers undergraduate study and doctoral programs in musicology and composition. Its performing groups, open to majors and non-majors, include the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Chorale, Opera Theater, Chinese Music, Djembe and Collegium Musicum. Students can take private and group lessons by audition. Its concert series, masterclasses and lectures bring guest artists to campus.
