About
North Carolina Central University's Department of Music in Durham trains students for careers in music. Bachelor of music students can concentrate in instrumental performance, vocal performance, music education, music industry or jazz. The jazz track covers theory, arranging, improvisation, composition and jazz history, and the university also has a graduate jazz studies program. The music industry track introduces digital production and the business and legal side of the profession. Beyond degree students, the department runs a summer jazz band camp in Durham where K-12 music teachers and adults improve their playing and learn to teach jazz. The camp includes large and small ensembles and a vocal jazz track. Auditions for the degree programs are held on set dates through the year.
