About
Warren Wilson College, a small liberal arts college near Asheville, offers a music major and minor with special emphasis on jazz studies, traditional music and West African music. The program blends theory and performance with Appalachian studies, musicology and ethnomusicology. Students take part in jam sessions, ensembles, lessons, group classes and work with visiting artists. Majors must audition, but most classes are open without one. Through the college's work program, students also organize music events, run sound and make recordings, and majors finish with a senior recital. The campus hosts public festivals and concerts, including five weeks of summer music workshops in old-time, Irish and contemporary folk music. The Kittredge Arts Center anchors the arts on campus.
