About

Dogwood Crafters is a craft cooperative in Dillsboro that began in 1976, when a small group of mountain crafters used $1,000 in leftover Bicentennial grant money to open a shop. At the time few Americans valued handmade goods, but the first dozen members kept at it. The co-op has since grown, moved and expanded, and today it carries a mix of traditional and contemporary work by its artisans. The shop sits in three joined log cabins, which the Cannon family built for tourists in the 1930s. Dogwood Crafters marked its 50th anniversary on April 11, 2026, and the Town of Dillsboro named that week Dogwood Crafters Week. The co-op also runs a scholarship program for students in art programs at North Carolina schools.
