About

Run entirely by volunteers, North Carolina Rice Festival, Inc. (NCRFI) hosts a yearly festival in Leland, in Brunswick County, celebrating the region's history of rice farming and its Gullah Geechee culture. The festival looks back at Brunswick County's past as North Carolina's top rice-producing area and highlights the region as the northernmost reach of the corridor known as the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, exploring links between African Americans native to the coast and people from the Rice Coast of Africa. W. C. Lanier founded the festival in 2014; NCRFI, chaired by George Beatty Jr., took it over in May 2019. NCRFI has also held gala dinners celebrating Gullah Geechee heritage and produced two video-documentaries on rice cultivation and foodways. Its board brings together community organizers, historians, artisans and professionals rooted deeply in Brunswick County.
