About

The N.C. Transportation Museum, both a historic site and a museum, covers North Carolina transportation history, from railroading to cars and aviation. It occupies the 60-acre site of the former Southern Railway Spencer Shops, where steam locomotives were once repaired. Visitors can ride trains in season, try hands-on exhibits, attend special events and browse the gift shop. Barber Junction Depot, a train station built in 1898, serves as the Visitor Center. The Bob Julian Roundhouse, the largest surviving roundhouse on the continent, shelters locomotives, a full-size replica Wright Flyer, and passenger cars. The Back Shop houses historic rail cars, fire trucks, antique automobiles and the Piedmont Airlines Potomac Pacemaker DC-3 under restoration, and the Flue Shop holds the Bumper to Bumper automotive exhibit.
