About

The Bascom is a visual arts center in Highlands set on six acres that were once a horse farm, and it has served Western North Carolina as a cultural resource for 40 years. Its six-building campus is entered across an 87-foot covered bridge and includes a rebuilt barn used as a ceramics studio and a three-story Main Building. Three galleries hold free exhibitions of artists from the local area, the region, the nation and abroad whose work the area might not otherwise see. Classes, workshops, lectures and seminars in many media serve artists of every age and skill level, with programs to help young people find their creative side. Visitors can also walk the Horst Winkler sculpture and nature trail, past native plants, a brook with a waterfall and scenic views. The Bascom supports working artists through residencies, sales, exhibitions and professional development.
