About

The White Oak Legacy Foundation, known as W.O.L.F., works to preserve North Carolina's textile history, especially Greensboro's denim heritage. It is named for the White Oak denim mill, whose closing in early 2018 ended 124 years of denim production in Greensboro. The foundation looks after the mill's history and its shuttle looms, aiming to keep vintage Draper looms weaving selvage denim for teaching and new ideas. It collects artifacts from Proximity Manufacturing Company and others, offers tours, displays and workshops, and promotes sustainable cotton and dyeing methods. Its first history exhibit, Innovations in Blue, is on view in northeast Greensboro and marks 100 years of indigo dye technology invented at White Oak, honoring Floyd Virgil Hayes, the plant's first Dyemaster. A documentary on the exhibit was made with Dr. Michael Frierson of UNC-G and his students.
