About
Durham Arts Council is a nonprofit that promotes the creation and enjoyment of the arts across Durham. It began in 1954 as Allied Arts and took its current name in 1975, making it the second oldest arts council in the country. It moved into the historic building that once housed Central High School and City Hall, built in 1906 downtown, and a $5.3 million campaign renovated it in the 1980s. Over the decades it launched arts classes, the street festival later called CenterFest, the Emerging Artists grants and a clay studio, and it leads the Art Walk program.
