About

NorthStar Church of the Arts is an arts space in Durham organized around five program areas: movement, music, visual art, Sunday Service and community events. It centers Black, queer and working-class artists and honors the creative work that keeps the city going. It has partnered with groups such as Kidznotes, Durham Community Fridges, the Durham Center for Senior Life and BUMP the Triangle. Heather Anne, its founding executive director, started the Durham Artist Relief Fund and, with the Nasher Museum, co-led a mural project across the city after the 2020 uprisings for Black lives. Germane James later piloted youth summer camps and a first long-term artist residency, and Lauren Garcia moved it to a shared leadership model. A 2023 episode of "My Home NC" on PBS featured NorthStar as a safe space for people pushed to the margins.
