About
The Old Marshall Jail Hotel, run by Marshall locals, turns the town's former jail above the French Broad River into a mix of art hotel, museum exhibit and preservation project. Original architectural pieces, artifacts, photographs and documents throughout the building tell the story of the place and the mountain community around it, acknowledging both the pain of incarceration and the community life the building held. On the second Wednesday of each month it hosts what it calls the only known ballad swap in the Southern Appalachians that recurs on a regular schedule. The Nest of Singing Birds, led by 7th and 8th generation ballad singers including NEA National Heritage Fellow Shelia Kay Adams and Donna Ray Norton, sings the songs and stories of their ancestors while guests eat and drink.
