About
Outer Bank Forum for the Lively Arts grew out of a 1983 meeting at the Southern Shores Fire Station, where residents started a forum to bring current-events speakers to the Outer Banks. In 1991 it turned to music and theatre, first with free shows by local performers in the Kitty Hawk Elementary School auditorium, where firefighters set out chairs for about 125 people. Board members and residents hosted visiting artists in their homes and even built stage extensions for the Virginia Symphony. A nonprofit since 1988 and a member of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium since 1999, the Forum has been based since 2004 in the 600 seat David E. Oaksmith Auditorium at First Flight High School, known for fine acoustics, and now books talent from around the world. It is still run entirely by volunteers.
