About

The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in Gibsonville is a North Carolina State Historic Site on the campus of Palmer Memorial Institute, the school Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown founded in 1902. Over much of the twentieth century the school educated nearly 2,000 African American students, and visitors today can explore the grounds where boys and girls lived and learned. The museum ties Dr. Brown and the institute to wider themes in education and in African American, women's and social history, highlighting the contributions of African Americans in North Carolina. Admission is free, with a small fee for guided tours, and school classes and other groups can request reservations through the state historic sites system.
