About
Hickory Museum of Art opened in 1944 with a mission to collect, nurture and preserve American art, beginning with eight works; its collection now holds about 1,500 objects. The museum promotes the Unifour region (Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties) as a place of creativity and inclusive community through the visual arts, education and collaboration. It credits its founding director, Paul Whitener, with bringing artists together to create it. The collection includes a large mixed-media work by Juan Logan and a painted wood piece by James Harold Jennings. Guided by the mission "ART for ALL," the museum offers exhibitions and educational programs and aims to help people of every background appreciate all forms of visual art.
