About

Historic Halifax is a state historic site on the Roanoke River that tells the story of a town that grew into a commercial and political center during the American Revolution. In April 1776, North Carolina's Fourth Provincial Congress met here and adopted the Halifax Resolves, the first time a whole colony officially recommended independence from England. Guided tours visit several restored and furnished buildings, and a self-guided walking tour includes an Underground Railroad trail, the 1790 Eagle Tavern and the 1838 jail. Costumed interpreters and craft demonstrations bring early Roanoke Valley life to the present, with living-history activities on most Saturdays. A renovated visitor center welcomes guests, and admission is free.
