About
The Joel Lane Museum House is a restored plantation manor in Raleigh, built around 1769 and now owned by a North Carolina society of the Colonial Dames of America. Joel Lane, a statesman, landowner, slaveholder and Patriot, is known as "The Father of Raleigh" because he sold 1,000 acres to the State in 1792 for the new capital. The museum brings 18th-century Piedmont North Carolina history to life, focusing on the Lane family and on the 43 people enslaved there, who lived and labored on the property. Guided tours, storytelling and hands-on experiences share that history with visitors of all ages.
