About
Mendenhall Homeplace in Jamestown is the historic site of the Historic Jamestown Society, which has preserved and shared the town's history for nearly 50 years through tours, programs and events. Jamestown was first settled in 1759 and laid out around 1792 by George Mendenhall. In 1816 Richard Mendenhall helped found the North Carolina Manumission Society, a group that won legal freedom for dozens of enslaved people, and the society invites visitors to walk the streets where that abolitionist history began. On the grounds stands the 1817 Madison Lindsay House, among the state's earliest medical schools. The society's stories also take in Revolutionary War events, gold mining, and the famed Jamestown rifles made by local gunsmiths. Visitors can book guided and private tours, and a capital campaign is underway to restore buildings and expand programs.
