Toe River Arts

269 Oak Avenue Spruce Pine NC 28777

About

Toe River Arts began in 1976 as the Toe River Arts Council, formed to champion the cultural and educational groups of Mitchell and Yancey Counties. Arts education has always been central to its work, and it has long partnered with the Mitchell, Yancey and Avery County schools so students can experience the arts. In 1993 the council joined a group of local artists in running their December studio tour, which proved popular enough that a spring edition followed in 1997. The tour now takes residents and visitors to more than one hundred local artists and galleries over three days. In Spruce Pine, the council bought a downtown storefront in 1999 and opened a gallery, gift shop and office there in 2001; a later renovation of the upper floor created the Arts Resource Center, home to the Owen Gallery. In Burnsville, a building near the town square holds a second gift shop and a small exhibition area, and the town became a pilot community for the North Carolina Arts Council's SmART Communities project.
