About
The Appalachian Theatre is an independent nonprofit venue in Downtown Boone that serves as an entertainment hub for residents and visitors across the High Country. Reopened in 2019 after a restoration to its original Art Deco look, it hosts live concerts, films, theatre, dance, and educational and community productions. The hall has 627 seats, plus a community room of 1,600 square feet that holds up to 113 people. Its facade and marquee were rebuilt in careful detail and unveiled in 2017, and the interior gained digital projection, stage lighting, a new sound system, dressing rooms and elevators. W. Ralph Winkler and his partner A. E. Hamby built the theatre in 1938, with design work by Lenoir architect Clarence P. Coffey, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. Billed in its day as a 999-seat movie house, it was probably the earliest Art Deco building in Watauga County, and early live acts on its stage included Doc Watson, Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs.
