About
VAPA, the Visual and Performing Arts Center, was formed in Charlotte in 2021 by 12 founding arts organizations, among them the McColl Center and Charlotte Ballet, after COVID and the shutdown of Spirit Square for library construction left many groups without space to teach, rehearse and perform. With Mecklenburg County, the group took over an underused uptown building on N. Tryon to serve as an arts center, inspired by creative incubators in other cities. VAPA aims to offer affordable studios and work space on the upper and lower floors, with performance and exhibition areas on the ground floor, so artists can make and show work under one roof and performers can learn, rehearse and appear before audiences there. Resident artists must live in Mecklenburg County. In 2024 the center received a Trailblazer Award from Center City Partners at its Vision Awards.
