About Davidson
Davidson was founded in 1837 along with Davidson College, a Presbyterian school named for General William Lee Davidson, a Revolutionary War hero. The college came before the town and shaped its trade, culture and buildings. After the railroad arrived, Davidson shipped cotton and served farmers, and cotton mills opened in 1890 and 1908. The town dropped the name Davidson College for plain Davidson in 1891. It lies mostly in northern Mecklenburg County, with part in Iredell, and its western edge follows Lake Norman. Since its 1993 plan, the town has backed smart growth, with walkable streets that led to a drive-thru ban. Its historic core gained National Register district status in 2009. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
