About
The N.C. Transportation Museum, both a museum and a historic site, is devoted to North Carolina's transportation history, from railroading to automobiles and aviation. It occupies the 60-acre site of the old Spencer Shops of Southern Railway, once a major repair facility for steam locomotives on the line between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. Visitors can take seasonal train rides, explore hands-on exhibits, attend special events and browse the gift shop. Barber Junction Depot, a train station built in 1898, now welcomes visitors as the museum's entry point, while the Bob Julian Roundhouse is the biggest roundhouse still standing in North America, and inside are locomotives, passenger cars and a full-size Wright Flyer replica. The Back Shop, where locomotives were once overhauled, now houses historic rail cars, fire trucks, antique automobiles and a Piedmont Airlines DC-3 under restoration, and the Flue Shop holds the Bumper to Bumper automotive exhibit.
