About
The Raleigh Fine Arts Society began in 1964, when a handful of volunteers exhibited local artwork at Raleigh's Olivia Raney Library, and it was formally organized the next year. Its purpose remains to cultivate, promote and take part in the arts by finding and recognizing creative people and helping their work reach audiences. Since the 1970s it has run a range of arts projects. These include a yearly juried exhibition of multimedia visual art by established and emerging North Carolina artists, drawing entries from more than 60 counties. Since 1999 it has held an annual Choral Celebration in which elementary school choirs from Wake County sing at Meymandi Concert Hall on two spring evenings. In 1978 it launched what is now the Spoken Word Contest, first a short-story contest, which has mostly been open to Wake County high school students in grades 10 through 12.
