About
The Gem Theatre has been a centerpiece of downtown Kannapolis for more than 85 years. Over that time it has hosted movie premieres, special dates, marriage proposals and wedding ceremonies, and it holds a place in the history of the city and its residents. The City of Kannapolis bought the theatre in 2015 and began refurbishing it, restoring the marquee and replacing or adding the roof, heating and air conditioning, and restrooms. The next phase turns to the interior, where the seats, screen, projector, curtains and old plaster motifs need repair or replacement, at an expected cost of about $1.2 million.
