About

The Swanee Theatre was built in downtown Kannapolis in 1940 by the owners of Cannon Mills as a social outlet for textile workers and the community, joining the Gem Theatre as the city's second movie house. Films and live shows there helped build a sense of community for residents. It opened as a single-screen theatre, unusual for the South in having no balcony, with all seating on the main floor, rows about 36 inches apart and aisles 54 inches wide. Early programs mixed Disney cartoons, musical performances, sports highlights, newsreels and feature films for audiences of all ages.
