The town

About Clayton

Clayton is a town in western Johnston County, with small pieces in Wake County, about sixteen miles southeast of downtown Raleigh. English surveyor John Lawson passed through the area in 1701 and the Tuscarora people lived here before being forced out after 1711. The town has grown quickly, helped by being close to the Research Triangle and to I-40 and US 70. Town Hall shares its building with The Clayton Center, which hosts performing arts and conferences. National Register sites include the Clayton Historic District and the Clayton Banking Company Building. Outdoor spots include the Clayton River Walk on the Neuse and the Bailey and Sarah William Preserve, with seven miles of trails. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
  • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
  • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Clayton advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
