About Henderson

Henderson is named for Leonard Henderson, a former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court who lived nearby. The General Assembly chartered it in 1841 and it belonged to Granville County until Vance County was created in 1881. Its National Register sites include the Henderson Central Business Historic District, the Vance County Courthouse and the Library and Laboratory Building of the Henderson Institute. Passenger trains on the old Seaboard main line stopped here until 1986. Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is nearby, and Roses Discount Stores has its headquarters in the city. Musicians from Henderson include Ben E. King and Shirley Owens of the Shirelles. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
