About Mebane
Mebane was incorporated as Mebanesville in 1881 and renamed two years later for General Alexander Mebane, a Revolutionary War officer who later served in Congress. It became a city in 1987. Most of Mebane is in Alamance County, with slivers in Orange County, and it sits between the Research Triangle and the Piedmont Triad. It is among the fastest-growing places in the state. In 2014 the council adopted the slogan Positively Charming. Downtown has home furnishing stores, antique shops, restaurants and coffee shops, and it was picked as one of the state’s Top Five Great Places for 2017. A New Deal post office mural by Margaret C. Gates, Landscape—Tobacco Curing, was damaged in 1965. Local artist Henry E. Rood III painted a replica. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
