About Pinehurst

Pinehurst is a village in southern Moore County, in the North Carolina Sandhills. James Walker Tufts bought the land in 1895 to create an affordable health resort. He hired Frederick Law Olmsted to design it, with curving lanes and a central green. Its first guests arrived in 1896 and the No. 2 course, designed by Donald Ross, was completed in 1907. The village became a municipality in 1980. Pinehurst Resort has hosted the men’s U.S. Open several times, and the World Golf Hall of Fame is now housed at Golf House Pinehurst, which opened in 2024. Much of the central village is a National Historic Landmark District, and the area is known for its equestrian community, including the Pinehurst Harness Track. Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • Ask the school district to publish its arts-education plan and arts leader, and list arts schools and camps.
  • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Pinehurst advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
