About Wendell

Wendell is a Wake County town and a satellite of Raleigh. It was settled in the 1850s by Granville County farmers whose tobacco crops had failed to a blight, and they moved here for better land. The local schoolteacher, M.A. Griffin, named the village for his favorite poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and the town was incorporated in 1903. Its oldest institution is Hephzibah Baptist Church, which dates to 1809. The Wendell Commercial and Wendell Boulevard historic districts are on the National Register. Local businesses include Bearded Bee Brewing and the North American headquarters of the maker of Kioti tractors, and Siemens has a plant at the edge of town. Growth surged in the 2020s. Southeastern Free Will Baptist College and a Wake Tech campus are here. Yearly events include a July 2 fireworks show, the Harvest Festival, an International Food and Music Festival and Wendell Wonderland. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
