About this event

North Carolina Symphony brings What Makes Music, Music?, its 2026/27 Education Concert, to students in grades 3-5. The program introduces the instruments of the orchestra and shows how rhythm, melody, dynamics, tempo, form and texture shape what listeners hear, using works by Mozart, Strauss, Joplin and others. The interactive concert runs about 60 minutes, includes a study guide, and costs $5/person for school groups. Teachers can draw on free lesson materials tied to the curriculum, and funding for transportation is available. Later that evening at 7:30pm, Hayes School of Music musicians give a free performance in the 2026/2027 series of Appalachian Arts. Founded in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony is led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto and reaches all 100 North Carolina counties each year.
