About
On August 9, 1949, the "Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County" was formed; it was the first arts council in the United States established at the local level. Its roots go back to 1943, when the Winston-Salem Junior League invited national consultant Virginia Lee Comer to study the city's cultural life; in 1949, representatives of twelve cultural groups came together to create the council. It is now the leading advocate for the county's arts and culture sector, working to raise awareness of and sustain creative and cultural offerings across the region and to foster inclusive, forward-looking conversations. Through its 2023 Community Fund for the Arts, it put $1.2 million into grants, awards and programs supporting artists and organizations in FY23.
