About
For more than six decades, the Beaufort Historical Association, begun by Carteret County residents and run without grants or government money, has been studying, preserving and interpreting the heritage, both cultural and architectural, of Beaufort and nearby coast. It runs the Beaufort Historic Site, which it owns: two acres within the historic district, holding six restored buildings that show how local people lived and worked across different periods. The site also holds the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, which shows regional art inside a historic building, and the Old Burying Grounds, among the oldest in North Carolina. The Association documents Beaufort's past peoples, customs and artifacts and opens archives and local records to historians, genealogists, educators and visitors.
