About

On Beaufort's Front Street, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center is the working boat shop of the North Carolina Maritime Museum, keeping the coast's traditional wooden boatbuilding alive. From a viewing platform above the shop floor, visitors can watch boats take shape, and through a glass wall see members of the Carolina Maritime Model Society build detailed wooden model boats over many months. The center offers boatbuilding courses, from a one-session plywood kit boat to an introductory class in steam bending, planking and fastening. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
