    About

Gaston School of the Arts (GSOA), founded in 1983, offers affordable, quality lessons in music, art and drama to children and adults across Gaston County and nearby areas. Its Children's Playhouse, started in 2000, gives young people chances to perform and learn across the theatre arts. Each year GSOA employs about 20 to 25 part-time instructors with degrees or equivalent professional experience in what they teach, covering individual music lessons, group classes, workshops, camps, Playhouse productions and a Youth Orchestra. The school grew out of an idea from the Rev. James M. Cockerham, then pastor at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, who had seen a church-related arts school in Decatur, Ala. Organist and choir director Beverly Linberger shared that vision, and the early school, known as "New Hope Community School of the Arts", taught everything from basketry, pottery and calligraphy to Suzuki violin, piano, voice and dance.
