About
Marshall Opera presents 20th and 21st century operas, mostly by American composers but also by composers from abroad, with a focus on new and neglected work. The company draws on the example of Richard Marshall, whose producing and conducting career spans opera in Tokyo, Boston, Charlotte and many Northeast cities, the company favors composers with strong musical craft, a love of singing and vivid dramatic imagination, and its casting puts the expressive beauty of the voice first. Beyond productions, it supports opera creators and performers as they develop new work and fosters conversation about the changing opera scene through lecture-recitals, scholarly articles and the Marshall Opera Oral History Project, in which young artists interview mature composers about their careers.
