About
Sandhills Family Heritage Association, a nonprofit, protects the land, history and legacy of Sandhills families of North Carolina. Its community programs and hands-on engagement lift up the region's cultural traditions and stories, with a focus on preserving African American cultural heritage, protecting land and livelihoods, and building economic self-sufficiency in underserved communities. Community leader Ammie McRae Jenkins, who in 1962 became the first African-American student High Point University admitted, began researching her family's history in 1970, and that personal search became a community effort to find and keep the story of African-American life in the Sandhills.
