About

Housed in the 1922 Carnegie Library building in downtown Murphy, the Cherokee County Historical Museum covers the history of the state's far western tip. The National Park System has certified it as a Trail of Tears Interpretive Center, and it stands close to where Fort Butler was, an important site during the removal of the Cherokee. Displays center on Cherokee history, with Native artifacts, pottery, baskets and a replica Cherokee home from the 1830s. Other exhibits address pioneer settlers, the Civil War and local life, showing tools, quilts, clothes, jewelry, minerals and an old schoolroom. The museum leads educational tours for every grade level and runs a gift and book shop.
