About

Founded in 1976 under the name Toe River Arts Council, Toe River Arts exists to encourage the cultural and educational groups already at work in Yancey and Mitchell Counties. Its emphasis on arts education came before the arts were part of the regular school curriculum, and it continues to work with the school systems of Mitchell, Yancey and Avery Counties. The council's best-known event grew from a December studio tour that local artists started in 1992; the council helped run it from 1993, added a spring tour in 1997, and now presents more than one hundred artists and galleries on three-day tours each spring and winter. Toe River Arts keeps a gallery and gift shop in downtown Spruce Pine, where the renovated second story houses the Arts Resource Center and its Owen Gallery, plus a gift shop and small exhibition space near the town square in Burnsville.
