About
Music in the Mountains is a yearly folk festival run by Toe River Arts, the arts council for Mitchell and Yancey counties. Since 1985 it has showcased local and regional traditional music and honored performers and promoters such as Sheila Kay Adams, Don Pedi and Bobby McMillon. Recent lineups included Sarah "Songbird" Burkey, Sam McKinney with William Ritter, and Barte Laney and friends. A paid vocal workshop led by a festival performer accompanies the concert. Toe River Arts, founded in 1976, also runs galleries in Spruce Pine and Burnsville and a twice-yearly studio tour. Its Traditional Arts Program for Students offers free guitar and fiddle classes.
