About Charlotte

Charlotte takes its name from Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who became Britain’s queen consort in 1761. The Catawba people’s trading paths on the Great Wagon Road turned into its first streets, and the town was incorporated in 1768. The nation’s first gold rush began in the area, and a U.S. Mint operated here until Confederate forces seized it in 1861. After the Civil War, railroads made Charlotte a regional trading hub, and by 1910 it had passed Wilmington as the state’s largest city. Today it ranks as the country’s second-largest banking center. Arts lovers can find Opera Carolina, the Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Ballet, the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, the Mint Museum, the Harvey B. Gantt Center, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the Levine Museum of the New South. NoDa, north of Uptown, is an emerging arts and entertainment area. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

    Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

    Next steps

    • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
    • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
    • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
    • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
    • Request the full Charlotte advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
